The stress tests of the past few weeks have probably not escaped any of you. Be it the number produced or the discussions surrounding it.
The IOTA Foundation sees stress testing as an indispensable part of the network for many reasons:
- They allow us to evaluate the overall condition of the network(S).
- They give way extremely useful data analyze.
- you Detecting bottlenecks in the node softwareIRI.
- They allow us to Cooperate with some of the most dedicated members of our community – the Spammers,
Why we have not run stress tests lately
The IRI team – the team responsible for the performance and health of Tangle – discussed the stress testing of the network several times over the past year. However, we have decided to focus our efforts on completing additions such as local snapshots and making other important improvements instead.
Once local snapshots have been released, we have revived the whole discussion and have come up with a plan. We have chosen Beginning of the stress test of the Mainnet in phases. The first phase will take place in March. In our view, this is plenty of time to fix the current problems with the 1.6.0 IRI build before the network gets heavily loaded.
The first phase will take place in part of the Mainnet network, which we will be laying the foundations for over the next few weeks. We call this "the mirror mesh" (in this case, it is more of a one-way mirror). This arrangement allows us both faithfully imitate the Mainnet environment enough and at the same time relieve the rest of the Mainnet, At least in this phase.
In the first phase, we can identify and fix the most obvious bottlenecks and issues and adjust the spam patterns. before we transfer traffic to the rest of the network, This means there will be a delay between phases so that we can analyze the results and act accordingly.
We will vote with community spammers and the rest of the community on specific dates for each phase.
Do we welcome the fact that the networks test the network stress?
We do and We appreciate all the effort you put into this cause, At the end of the day, we will build an illegitimate ecosystem. The network must be resilient to any behaviorAnd if not, at least we know where to improve.
Will we stay calm during these network events? Of course not. It is a strange mixture of stress and excitement, I imagine that engineers responsible for vehicle safety feel alike when the car they worked on for years undergoes crash tests. A burden of the Mainnet shows usThere are problems that we did not know, and they emphasize those we knew about.
We have a Number of planned solutions to improve node software – Many improvements are short-term and become immediately visible. Other improvements are long term, but also extremely important The IRI code becomes more adaptable, easier to maintain and more secure to publish. Improvements like these are not immediately visible, but will pay off in the long term. Gal, IRI's team leader, has gone to great lengths to improve the code standard.
For example, an immediate visual improvement should be how nodes are treated getTransactionsToApprove and other API calls. But IRI generally needs to become more stable, resource-hungry, and handle more transactions. Optimizing the way in which incoming transactions are hashed is just one piece of the puzzle.
Stress tests on the Mainnet should be a norm. We organize and carry out stress tests regularly and after releases that aim to improve node throughput. The aim is to assess the progress we are making and become more accountable to the community. After every test we will Focus on improvements and analyze the results and results, Of course, what happens between the spam tests is up to you – we expect stress tests to be conducted in the community if the community sees fit.
Make sure you participate in the discussion on the IOTA Discord server Here , If you are particularly interested in stress testing, the #tanglespam channelis a good place to be.
You are welcome to set up your own node and become part of the network, please check the IRI repo. See Development updates on the node software, check the # IRI discussion channelYou will regularly find technical updates on this blog.
